Resumen

La Geoquímica Médica es un campo interdisciplinar, relativamente reciente, que explora las relaciones entre los materiales geológicos, los procesos geoquímicos y la salud humana (patrones de enfermedad y salud pública). Los oligoelementos esenciales (como Fe, Zn, Cu y Se) son vitales para las funciones fisiológicas, mientras que los elementos tóxicos (como As, Pb y Hg) representan un riesgo importante para la salud. Las fuentes de metales esenciales y tóxicos pueden ser naturales (rocas, suelo, polvo, erupciones volcánicas, incendios forestales naturales, entre otros) y/o antropogénicas (minería, agricultura, industria, quema de hidrocarburos, entre otros). La ingesta de agua, el consumo de productos cultivados en suelos ricos en metales y la inhalación de polvo son vías clave de exposición. Los avances en geoquímica analítica y los mapas geoquímicos proporcionan información fundamental para evaluar los riesgos medioambientales. Comprender la influencia de la geoquímica en la salud es esencial para desarrollar políticas de salud pública, estrategias de remediación e intervenciones preventivas. Este trabajo integra una revisión del estado actual de la geoquímica médica y de casos de estudio relevantes. La información presentada puede utilizarse en un curso de Geoquímica Ambiental para introducir el tema a nivel de licenciatura y/o de posgrado.
