Resumen

Los suelos de zonas urbanas son distintos a los suelos naturales de los agro/ecosistemas por todas las transformaciones antrópicas que han sufrido debido al desarrollo de infraestructura. Son distintos, pero cumplen con las mismas  funciones ecológicas y cobran relevancia por los beneficios que proveen a los habitantes de las ciudades a través de los valores ecosistémicos. En esto radica la importancia de conocer más sobre los suelos urbanos para integrarlos en la discusión del diseño de ciudades sustentables y disfrutables y en ese sentido, la intención de este escrito es describir las funciones ecológicas de los suelos, para entenderlos como sostén de la vegetación, medio para el cultivo de alimentos, hábitat de organismo y  reguladores del ciclo hidrológico y de la calidad del agua y del aire. Sobre todo enfatizar en las  buenas prácticas de manejo de suelos que favorecerían a iniciativas de política ambiental en las ciudades y las acciones que cada persona puede implementar en torno a la salud y calidad de los suelos urbanos que favorecen la salud y calidad de vida de todos los seres vivos de una ciudad. A lo largo del texto se hacen preguntas para motivar la reflexión y generar curiosidad de los suelos que pisamos.
